Trip Plan To Explore The North Of Corfu

The north side of Corfu is appealing for its beautiful beaches, vibrant communities and lovely villages. Of course, you don’t have to be a genius to understand that you’re about to experience the finest cuisine around.

This isn’t necessarily the quietest part of Corfu though. But then, you’re likely to experience tranquillity and serenity in a nice environment. It doesn’t feel like the hustle and bustle in the old town, but it’s not as quiet as some isolated parts of Corfu either.

Whether you travel by car, taxi or bus, the north west offers a nice experience over a few days. It makes no difference if you only have a few days in Corfu or if you’re looking for something new on a daily basis. Keep in mind these are only some recommendations, as you can divert or stop as you wish.

Start In Kerkyra

If you have quite a few days, it pays off spending one or two of them in the old town. Explore local landmarks and attractions, enjoy the local food and have fun walking around in the evening. There’s nothing like a cocktail after sunset in the old town.

You can probably visit the main attractions of Corfu in one day if you’re in a rush, but it’ll be tiring. Therefore, spend at least a couple of days. Start with a nice breakfast and a coffee or tea, visit a few attractions, eat, relax and repeat.

Go To Kontokali

Ready to go? Perfect. Start your day in Kontokali. The bay is only a short drive from the old town, up north. Enjoy the beautiful views and marina. Moreover, there are a few good cafés there, ideal for a fresh start in the morning.

Kontokali was named after Christophoros Kontokalis, a captain who excelled in the Battle of Lepanto. The eastern part of the headland has a sandy beach if you’re after a nice walk. Of course, if you have more days to spare and you plan to spend a whole day in Kontokali, you also have diving and sailing centres.

Up To Gouvia

Gouvia isn’t too far up north. You can also walk, yet it might be a bit difficult on a hot summer’s day. Based on your availability, you could hang around both Kontokali and Gouvia on the same day before setting off.

Gouvia is famous for the Ipapantis Church, a small church jutting out into the bay. If you’re into rocks and archaeology, you can also visit the Venetian Arsenal. Like in every other village, you’ll find some nice local cafés and restaurants too.

Dassia And Ipsos

Looking for a nice dip? Perfect. Head north to Dassia and Ipsos. They’re located close to each other. Both beach towns have some nice beaches to enjoy and numerous facilities. You can find cafés and restaurants, ideal for relaxation.

If you have the time, you can spend a whole day between these towns. There’s not much to do, but you could recharge your batteries by reading a book on the beach, having a nice meal or perhaps a few drinks at night.

Barbati Beach

Barbati is further north. Even if you’re only interested in exploring the island, every vacation to Corfu requires a day or two of full relaxation. Barbati goes hand in hand with Dassia and Ipsos. Practically, all you can do here is relax.

As you drive there, you’ll go along the foothills of Mount Pantokrator. Stop once you get to the turquoise waters of the beach. Have a few drinks on the beach before enjoying the traditional Greek cuisine at its local tavernas.

Nissaki, Agni And Kalami

These consecutive bays are ideal for relaxation, time on the beach and some snorkelling and diving activities. The water is super clear as well. If you’re good at swimming and you want the experience of a lifetime exploring the deep waters around Corfu, these places are for you.

Nissaki is lovely if you’re after good food. It’s a fishing village, so fish-based dishes are always fresh. Moreover, those who loved the shows, movies and books about the Durrels can also visit the famous white house from Kalami.

While slightly quieter, Agios Stefanos Kassiopi is also worth a visit. You’ll have to keep going north. It has some good local tavernas and cafés. Nothing fancy, but the type of food you’d find in an isolated village in the middle of nowhere. Delicious and natural.

Agios Stefanos Kassiopi will also give you good views over Albania due to its proximity.

Reaching Kassiopi

Kassiopi is a lively resort. There are plenty of places to spend your money, from food and drinks to art and souvenirs. There are also a few ruins you can visit, such as the Kassiopi Castle overlooking the resort.

If you’re thinking of relaxing a bit, you’ll find a variety of beaches around Kassiopi. Besides, it’s one of the liveliest small villages in Corfu. You’ll notice many bars and tavernas open up at night, while the main street is vibrant and full of people.

How About A Detour?

From Kassiopi, you can drive back to the old town. In normal conditions, the drive is less than an hour away. However, if you still have a few days to spare, there are a few other things to do. This detour goes further and further, but you can stop anytime and go back to Kerkyra.

  • Sidari. There are a few nice beaches around here, a main road with lots of restaurants and the famous Canal D’Amour. Rocky formations are ideal for pictures and some relaxation.
  • Cape Drastis. Fancy a walk? A bit of a hike? There’s a bit of everything in this itinerary suggestion, so a hike would be just as attractive. Cape Drastis is a masterpiece of nature.
  • Paleokastritsa. Reaching Paleokastritsa makes the detour just slightly longer, so it’s totally worth it. The Paleokastritsa Monastery offers some stunning views.

Back To Kerkyra

Cross the central part of the island and you’ll be back to Kerkyra in no time. Bottom line, this itinerary should keep you busy for at least five days, maybe more if you prefer to take your time and explore while you relax and enjoy the beautiful island.
