Erimitis holds a special place in everyone’s heart. Whether you have visited Corfu or you live here, this place of amazing natural beauty is special for everyone. Both locals and visitors enjoy the living biosphere enhanced with lush nature, one of the parts that make Corfu so special.
The Cultural Merit Of Erimitis
Erimitis is one of the few places in Corfu where the Venetians did not intervene to add olive trees. It is one of the few natural areas left untouched. Back then, even the Venetians figured its authentic beauty and cultural value.
Whether Erimitis is explored by sea or land, it aims to offer an extraordinary impression, similar to what heroes of ancient times have felt while getting there. Several aspects of the human presence have become part of the scenario though, but without affecting its cultural integration.
The little rock of Caparelli, for example, is associated with ancient mythology and Greek heroes of the past.
The Stunning Landscape Of Erimitis
The stunning landscape of Erimitis is what makes this lush area so popular. It is unique and feels like a completely different world. With tranquil beaches, small bays, turquoise waters and lots of green, Erimitis offers a wild shoreline that has charmed everyone around Corfu.
Believe it or not, it is one of the very few parts of Corfu that has been preserved by the book, rather than spoiled by people. It offers access to recreation and exploration, but in a way that makes you feel like going back in time, before people inhabited the island.
The Biodiversity Of Erimitis
Mild human interactions have kept the ecosystem of Erimitis unspoiled. This means you can enjoy biodiversity at its finest.
It is believed that more than all the plants in Erimitis have not even been recorded yet. Most of the flora covers forest species with hundreds of years of history, herbs and shrubs, as well as wild orchids. You can find strawberries, blackberries, English daisies, hawthorns and plenty of flowers.
Wild orchids stand out because they are extremely rare.
The fauna is not to be overlooked either, with otters, robins, ducks, moorhens, sandwich terns, rare wild doves and numerous reptiles hanging around together too. Many of these species are protected by the law due to their rarity.
Wetland ecosystems and marine ecosystems are impressive as well.
The Economic Value Of Erimitis
Erimitis is an irreplaceable natural resource. It is also seen as a resource for sustainable development, since it retains its original character and beauty. It supports the local economy too, mainly with the quality visitors understanding its beauty and leaving nothing but footprints behind.
Some may struggle to understand the economic value of Erimitis, but it is definitely there with its natural sophistication, offering support to the north east side of Corfu and the surroundings.
Erimitis In Danger
Erimitis is home to threatened species, hundreds of registered species of flora, dozens of species of wild orchids and a few protected wetlands. It spreads over 1,500 acres, with about 30% of its surface being available to the public.
Unfortunately, governmental agencies and private companies are trying to spoil this heavenly side of Corfu by clearing nature and ditching it like it did not even exist, only to make room for luxury developments.
There are more campaigns against the process, gaining support for both locals and famous figures, not just in Greece, but all over the world. Hopefully, Erimitis remains as special as it has always been for nature lovers, travellers, locals, runners and sailors.
