The Nerantzika Tower used to be part of the old walls of the town – a sophisticated system keeping the old town safe. However, everything else has been destroyed – no other walls in the system. This is the only one left. There used to be a port in the area in the antiquity – known as Alcinoo. The entrance to the port was marked by two large towers – the initial starting points of the walls. Corfu has seen multiple invasions throughout its history, so walls go destroyed overtime. This tower is still there because it was built into a Byzantine chapel that celebrates Virgin Mary. The tower is part of the Paleopoli archaeological site.
