There is something different when it comes to reading a good book. And when the action is set in Corfu or features some Corfiot locations, that book becomes even better.

Whether you are looking for a good book to bring back some memories or you are trying to get in the mood for the perfect vacation in Corfu, here are some interesting titles to put you in a good mood.

A House In Corfu, Emma Tennant

Nothing can bring in a better mood than this book. The action takes place in the 1960s. The author’s parents found an amazing bay while on a cruise and decided to move there. This book covers the story of that amazing house, built from scratch in Rovinia.

The book also covers the people involved in this adventure, from local cooks and workers to villagers. Full of adventure and contrast, this is the type of story that almost makes you feel like you are there, in the middle of action.

Olives, sea and sun, that is pretty much what you can expect from this masterpiece.

Behind The Olive Trees, Francesca Catlow

This is the second book in the Little Blue Door trilogy. While there are a few connections, you do not necessarily need the others to experience Corfu in a good read. Anyway, the story follows Melodie, who got back to her mother’s house in Corfu after inheriting the place.

Expecting to find an empty property, Melodie discovered a girl who claimed to own the place. Trying to find a balance between her new life and the unexpected inhabitant, Melodie figured there is much more to reveal about the property.

Burning Island, Suzanne Goldring

This book brings in two dramatic stories, with the action moving from World War II to our times. The book begins with Matilde and Anna right before World War II started, when their sun scorched home was endangered by the Nazi invasion.

The action moves on to 2006, when Amber and her husband came to Corfu from England. Hoping for a fresh beginning, the couple was surprised to find a rather hostile attitude from the locals. The island had some secrets to be discovered.

My Family and Other Animals, Gerald Durrell

Written from a personal perspective, this is one of the most popular books about Corfu, mainly because the author’s life has also been featured in television. Since they could no longer live in England, the Durrells decided to relocate to Corfu.

This book was originally written as an incursion into the natural history of the island, which is definitely astonishing. However, the author’s style made it more like a hilarious account of the family’s experiences away from home.

Birds, Beasts and Relatives, Gerald Durrell

There is nothing more relaxing than reading a book about Corfu, written by an adult, but based on childhood memories. This is the second book in the famous trilogy written by Gerald Durrell and features his boyhood throughout the 1930s.

Originally released in 1969, this book was mainly focused on the animals in the author’s personal zoo. It brought in much more information though, from family adventures and childlike wonder to memories and anecdotes.

The Garden of the Gods, Gerald Durrell

This third book in Gerald Durrell’s trilogy follows the exact same principles. Ideally, you should go through the first two before getting into this one. The action is aimed at the animals discovered in Corfu, but to most people, the action goes in a different direction.

Small details make the difference in this masterpiece. Apart from having a laugh at the family members’ adventures, readers will also experience a unique description of the Corfiot heaven, along with everything else around it.

Corfu, Robert Dessaix

This book is excellent if you are thinking to move to Corfu or perhaps spend a long vacation on the island. Even if you only want a good read while chilling on a beach, it will put you in a perfect mood and help you understand the local culture.

The story follows a young Australian man and his life in Corfu, trying to make new friends, getting used to the customs and so on. The action floats around the world though, with some of it taking place in Australia or England.

Corfu Capers, Joy Skye

Looking for a relaxing book and a funky story about love and new beginnings in Greece? Joy Skye’s book might be the perfect option then. The story follows Kate, a divorcée trying to show everyone that she can do very well without a man in her life too.

However, things got quite exciting when her son decided to propose to his girlfriend. The excited mother decided to organize a vacation in Corfu to set the environment for the event. However, one thing led to another and a series of funny consequences pushed Kate into the relaxing Greek way of life.

Corfu Sunset, John Waller

Interested in experiencing the Corfiot lifestyle? This book has a bit of everything and shows the hassle many foreigners have to go through when they decide to renovate an old ruin, only to call it home. It may sound crazy for locals, but people love it.

All in all, this story follows John and his wife from Denmark. Ready to renovate their holiday home from Corfu, they had no idea they would end up dealing with a ruin. Their struggle went in all directions, from dealing with sewage to building a road.

Crime in Corfu, Irene Korakianiti

This is not just a book, but an actual trilogy. Each book has the same title, but to go through it correctly, make sure you start with the first one. While connections are limited, the story becomes much more detailed if you go through the entire trilogy.

Each book brings in an international hunt for criminals. Get ready to discover an intricate system of lies and stories that may not always make sense. Plot twists everywhere, detective stories and plenty of action in Corfu, it sounds like the perfect scenario.

While there are countless travel guides out there, we tried to put together a list of memoirs, novels and historical books related to Corfu in one way or another. The list is certainly longer, but the below mentioned titles should keep you busy for a long time.
