Built by Georgios Karahalios, the Holocaust Memorial from Corfu is a statue dedicated to the local Jewish community. There were around 2000 Jews living in Corfu before World War II. Most of them were deported after Corfu was occupied by Germans. Not less than 1795 Jews were deported in 1944 to Auschwitz. Only 121 Jews survived. The local Jewish community is quite small these days and counts around 60 people. The monument was established in 2001. It is located in the old town, so it is worth a visit. It also features a plaque with touching words about the horrors Jews had to go through.
