Often referred to as the Castle of the Angel, Angelokastro is a Byzantine castle located on the highest peak of the island’s shoreline. It is built on a rocky terrain and oversees the old town, as well as some of the mountains of mainland Greece. It is among the most fortified complexes in Corfu. It never fell, despite the regular invasions and attempts through the history. During invasions, Angelkastro was mostly used to shelter the local population. At the same time, villagers also used to fight against invaders. It is hard to tell when the castle was built, yet historians attribute it to Michael I Komnenos.
