Located close to the gate to the New Fortress, the Monastery of Tenedos is also known as the Latin Church of Virgin Mary of Tenedos. It is among the most unique churches in the old town, yet it might be a bit challenging to find. It is named after a picture of the Virgin Mary. The monastery was erected in the 15th century, yet it was renovated in 1723. You can tell by the inscription placed above the main entrance. Greece’s first public library was established inside this monastery in 1796. Prior to that, the monastery hosted the first printing press in Greece, in 1798. Several national scripts were printed on site.
